The Locus class in this database comprises all mappable entities, including genes, genetically defined loci for which no specific gene has been identified, transposon insertion sites, BAC ends, and molecular polymorphisms. Alleles are variants at a locus, usually but not necessarily corresponding to mutants.
Locus and Allele names in general follow the guidelines proposed in June 1994 by the nomenclature committee headed by Susan Dutcher. These recommendations were posted to the bionet.chlamydomonas newsgroup and have been published by Susan Dutcher in the Trends in Genetics Genetic Nomenclature Guide [Dutcher, S.K. (1995) Genetic nomenclature guide. Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, Trends in Genetics (18-9)].
Genes have previously been named wherever possible in accordance with the recommendations of the Commission on Plant Gene Nomenclature, but this terminology is now being revised as annotation of the genomic sequence progresses, and global nomenclature conventions are becoming adopted in other organisms. Gene names in this database are case-sensitive; this is to permit the convention of beginning organelle gene names with lower-case letters (atpB is a chloroplast gene, ATPC is a nuclear gene). Locus names are also case-sensitive.
All Locus, Allele, Gene, and Strain citations refer to Chlamydomonas reinhardtii unless otherwise specified.
Clones are DNA segments isolated from Chlamydomonas. Probes are clones, restriction fragment length polymorphisms or other variants used as hybridization markers in molecular mapping studies. Most probes have been mapped to specific linkage groups, as indicated. For many of the probe entries, sample data are given to show the polymorphisms between C. reinhardtii and C. smithii or S1 D2.
